What form of money is the best to travel through Central America?
I will go throughout Central and perhaps a bit of South America, and I wonder what would be the best way to move all my money. There are cash, travelers checks, credit card, travelers checks etc. easily cashable? How much of a tax would have on them? I just did not want to carry a wad of cash in my pocket. Suggestions? And how do I bring for a trip of 3-4 months? 5000-6000 $?
Credit cards are the best. Among the majors, only load Discover does not charge exchange fees or purchases and money abroad. Of course, you pay the exchange rate and banks may charge. Most cards can withdraw money in ATMs, but also the local bank may have a service charge. Use the card for purchases directly. You need a small amount cash and travelers checks, but not much. You can still use credit cards for more travelers checks in Central America, buy as you go along.
