How can I tell if my necklace is Lead?
Hi there! I have a little ball chain necklace (the one that looks like metal pearls) and I was wondering if it could be potentially poisonous. I don't know its origin; I got it as a gift. Every time I touch it my hands smell like pennies and blood. Could it be some other material? I heard of burning it in a gas oven thing but honestly I have an electric stove. I DO have candles though, and a fire pit I can use later if needed. Please help, some other metal objects in my house smell similarly and I want to know if they are dangerous..
My pocket watch smelled very faintly like the aforementioned smell, yet it went away after a day. Could this be lead? I ordered another pocket watch from Hong Kong, and am worried it might be made of lead. Lead is malleable, right? So i have my doubts, they certainly arent malleable, but even still, what could it be made of?
You can probably find a lead test in a drug store. I bought one many years ago at Walmart. Don't know if they still have them though. They should not be very expensive.
From the smell you describe it could also be copper, although I would think you could tell by either a copper red color or a greenish 'patina' on your necklace and possibly your neck, when you take it off.
If you have any reactions you should not wear it. You could be allergic to copper, or the lead on your bare skin is also not a good thing.
Do some reaserch on lead tests on the web. Then test it with those before you wear it again.
