Crystal Quartz Pocket
Can someone help me to identify this stone?
About a week ago, I was on my daily walk and I found this crystal-like stone on the sidewalk. I picked it up and put it in my pocket. I have treated it like a quartz crystal, i.e. letting it get sunlight and leaving it by my bedside, but I am unsure if it is, indeed a crystal. It is completely clear and white - no color to it. There are small parts on the surface that appear slightly irridescent when exposed to light. It is not heavy at all - very light, actually. It's about 2 by 2.5 inches or so.
I live in Allen, Texas, which is in the North east corner of Texas - so I cannot figure out why a quartz crystal would just be laying right on the sidewalk. I took pictures with my phone, so they are a bit blurry, I apologize. If anyone can help me figure out what kind of stone this is, I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

Well, from the photograph, I'd hazard to guess that its a hunk of quartz... and I'll suggest it's likely a piece of metaquartzite- from some silicic metamorphic rock. I suggest that mostly from the fracture and cleavage I think I see- color and lustre too, from what I can make out. I dunno about the ostensible irridescence- there are spots that almost look like mica inclusions here and there, but it may well be a trick of the photo-flash on the crystalline surface. You can try a hardness test- quartz rings in around 7.0 on the Moh's scale, so it ought to scratch glass or even steel pretty easily.... on the ceramic back of your Mom's best china, it should be about a wash.
Regarding provenance- I know little of Dallas area surface geology, but I think most of it is Cretaceous-age sediment, so that thing might well have come out of a road-bed or construction project- aggregate mined from somewhere else. Looks about the right size for it. I call those "cultural erratics". I might also call it "leverite" (leverite where you found it) if I was inclined to be pedantic.
I must admit that I was unaware of any proper way to "treat" quartz, though I'll keep that in mind henceforth, as I should not like to experience any unpleasant repercussions from my minerals. Good luck.
