A cell Galvanic is manufactured with a silver-silver chloride electrode and a strip of nickel immersed in a beaker containing 1.56x 10-2 M NiCl2 solution. Determine the response of the cell balance and calculate the potential of the cell. Enter volts. (assuming a temperature of 25 oC)
First, the reduction reactions for the two species are: AgCl + e-"Ag + Cl-[0.22 V] Ni (2 +) + 2e-" Neither [-0.23 V] However, one of the equation must be reversed to become the oxidation reaction and to the positive potential. The second will be oxidized. AgCl + e-"Ag + Cl-[0.22 V] Neither Neither (2 +) + 2e-[0.23 V] Then, the first reaction is multiplied by two electrons to disappear in the overall equation. The potential is left alone. 2AgCl + 2e-2 Ag 2 Cl [0.22 V] Ni "Ni (2 +) + 2e-[0.23 V] Add the equations together and to ... 2AgCl + Ni "Cl-2Ag 2 + Ni (2 +) [0.45 V]
