In fact, quartz is sometimes be purple (or other colors such as yellow) as impurities in the rock. Probably, it * is * quartz. However, if you view an image and ask the question again, someone with more knowledge than I could identify. One last thing: if I understand your description, it * not * like agate I have seen, which is normally composed entirely of bands (layers) of different colors and tends to be opaque or translucent (Hard to see through), while the quartz tends to be translucent or transparent (easy to see through) and do not have "gangs" as that "pools" or "regions" of color.
